For the second consecutive year, SUBPLACE, in collaboration with the Accademia di Como, presents ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS for the summer season, an incursion into the work of very young artists selected through a call for entries open to students enrolled in the two-year Painting & Digital Art programme and the three-year Painting and Visual Languages programme, with the aim of giving visibility to new talent with a solo exhibition at SUBPLACE. After Sancha (15 July-1 September), the second solo exhibition is dedicated to Caterina Giammona.
Caterina Giammona's research is based on the dialectical comparison between past and present, developing a personal and recognisable pictorial language in which sacred iconography, digital culture and references to pop visuality are intertwined. Rotting Machine – Saint Lucy is a triptych in the form of a portable altar, part of a series in which the artist reworks the tradition of devotional altarpieces, projecting them into a contemporary dimension. The choice to depict Lucy, a martyr venerated by the Christian and Orthodox churches, takes on an emblematic value: protector of sight, the saint no longer seems able to “see”, thus becoming the emblem of a subjectivity unable to orient itself in the information overload and fragmentation of narratives that characterise the current era.
