The Academic Foundation Year: An Immersive Journey into Italian Culture is a course designed for students who have completed twelve years of schooling and wish to learn Italian with the goal of continuing their studies in Italy.

Participants will not only develop their language skills but will also immerse themselves in a culture rich in history, creativity, and innovation.

Beyond the focus on the language, the program introduces key disciplines such as design, fashion, art, and restoration — fields that represent Italian excellence worldwide. Through a combination of theoretical and experiential learning, students will gain interdisciplinary skills and a deeper understanding of Italian culture.
More than just a language course, this is a comprehensive educational journey designed to bridge linguistic knowledge with academic and professional realities.

Compared to the other Foundation Year Courses offered by Accademia di Como, the Academic Foundation Year: An Immersive Journey into Italian Culture offers a higher number of “Italian language and culture” teaching hours.

Information to decide

The course is structured around three key dimensions:

  • Intensive Language Learning: Intensive modules in Italian language and culture (taught in Italian), culminating in two exams at the B1 and B2 levels. These exams are held in June, and students will receive a certification from Centro Studi Italiani, validating their acquired skills and level. Compared to the other Foundation Year Courses offered by Accademia di Como, the Academic Foundation Year: An Immersive Journey into Italian Culture offers a higher number of “Italian language and culture” teaching hours.

  • Preparatory Cultural Studies (taught in English).

  • Experiential Learning: Workshops, project-based labs, coaching and guidance sessions, site visits, and special lectures (taught in Italian).

The course schedule integrates these three dimensions, combining classroom lessons, workshops, special events, and field visits, along with individual and group projects.

Students must attend at least 80% of the lessons to qualify for final exams. Tutoring and language support are available throughout the course.

The course is designed for students who have completed 11 years of education and wish to enhance their knowledge of the Italian language and culture, as well as specific fields of study, to enroll in a Bachelor course in Italy.

To enroll, students must have:

  • A1-level proficiency in Italian;

  • B1-level proficiency in English, certified through an academic credential and/or an assessment interview (Skype interview available);

  • High school diploma.

The Academic Foundation has four main strengths:

- Dedicated Tutor Support

Throughout the program, the tutor plays a key role in supporting students, guiding them from enrollment to course completion.

Acting as a bridge between students, the school, and faculty, the tutor fosters individualized interaction and creates a welcoming and inclusive learning environment. For under-age students, the tutor also coordinates with host families, ensuring constant communication for a safe and enriching educational experience.

- Cultural Visits and Extracurricular Activities

During the year, students will have the opportunity to visit iconic Italian cultural sites, local businesses, art studios, galleries, and museums.

These visits, always accompanied by a faculty member or tutor, provide a deep dive into Italy’s cultural and artistic heritage.

Additionally, students can practice Italian in informal and immersive settings, such as:

Social and networking events

Cooking classes

Handmade workshops

- The City of Como

Located on the shores of the stunning Lake Como, the city provides a serene and inspiring environment, ideal for study and concentration. At the same time, Como is just one hour from Milan, offering privileged access to Italy’s artistic, cultural, and professional opportunities.

- Host Family Accommodation or Legal Tutor for Under-age Students

A trusted local agency will support international underage students, arranging host family accommodations or putting the family in touch with a legal tutor in Italy.
